Guide to SOLAS/Verified Gross Mass
A shippers' guide to the implementation of Solas regulations on Verified Gross Mass of containers.
The new SOLAS regulation about Verified Gross Mass of container weights will become effective 1 July 2016. This new regulation will have impact on most active parties in the containerized supply chain. Vessel operators and terminal operators are required to use Verified Gross Mass (container weights) in stowage plans. In order for them to receive the information before loading the containers onboard it will be mandatory for shippers to share the Verified Gross Mass with the booking agent and/or forwarder.
Estimating the weight, in whatever way, will not be permissible.
The shipper (or a third party under the shippers responsibility) is required to weigh the packed container or all of its contents, depending on the selected method. The weighing equipment that is used must meet national certification and calibration requirements.
Containers without a Verified Gross Mass will not be loaded on board.
